Great insights, Erman! I especially loved the discussion on utility. You really hit it on the nose that if you ask a participant if they will use a cool new product, they'll likely say yes. But what we want to understand as researchers is if the product will actually be valuable to them. Having them describe how they might use it in their day-to-day life is a great way to suss out whether a participant just thinks an idea is cool or if it would actually be a value add to them. Yes, definitely agree with that way of describing it. I've been in interviews before where the researcher asks "how much do you like this concept on a scale of 1-10?". There might be situations where that's helpful, but I've found it to be pretty useless most of the time for exactly the reason you suggest here. Often, people will respond with high numbers that are completely at odds with everything else they say in the interview, making it impossible to interpret. Thanks for commenting!
